Bishop Museum
A treasure any city would be proud of, the Bishop Museum combines a modern science-activity complex, planetarium, sports hall-of-fame and natural history museum. This must surely house the most complete and comprehensive collection of items celebrating the cultural heritage of the Hawaiian and Polynesian peoples and the natural history of Hawaii. The museum is divided into separate buildings with a Hawaiian and Polynesian Hall, the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center, Paki Hall (containing the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame as well as library and archives), Jabulka Pavilion (which includes not only the café and gift shop but also the planetarium), and the Castle Memorial Building, which houses temporary and travelling exhibits.

The Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 in honor of the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. The Hawaiian Hall has three floors worth of priceless artifacts and displays that teach visitors about the cultural history of Hawaii and its inhabitants. The Polynesian Hall also celebrates other Pacific cultures, including Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian cultures. Many people consider the Hawaiian Hall their favorite, particularly the Kahili room, which houses famous regal feather standards of the Hawaiian royal families.

The Science Adventure Center is especially kid-friendly, and filled with many interactive exhibits including a remote-controlled submersible and the simulation of an exploding volcano. In face, the centerpiece of the building is a walk-in “volcano” where visitors can examine the different kinds of lava rocks found all around the islands. Most of the exhibits focus on the biodiversity of the Hawaiian Islands, oceanography of the Pacific, and volcanology of the islands.

The museum is open every day with the exception of Tuesdays and Christmas Day, 9am-5pm. General Admission for Adults is $17.95, seniors 65+ and children ages 4-12 are $14.95. Parking is available on the premises.
