Canoeing in Oahu
Canoes are an important part of Hawaiian culture, having been used for exploration, fishing and travel between the islands by Hawaiians for centuries. The traditional method of construction for a canoe began with considerable forethought and spiritual preparation. After conducting sacred prayers and rituals, the craftsmen selected a tree for the hull and began to shape the small boat using stone tools. These were not just simple dugout canoes, the study of the evolution of canoe construction in the Hawaiian Islands notes that canoes could feature racks for fishing spears, complicated rigging incorporating the use of sails, and additional components including bailers and anchors. As they developed in sophistication for practical purpose, large double-hulled canoes were constructed that could comfortably accommodate up to 100 passengers, using sails and paddlers to make swift trips for travel.

Today, canoeing is a great way to get out into the water and get a taste of what it must have been like to use canoes as a primary means of travel between islands and over long distances. In honor of the proud canoeing tradition in Hawaii, Oahu has multiple clubs that race outrigger canoes and celebrate the importance of canoes to Hawaiian culture. Although not a venue for rentals or tours, the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA) organizes regatta and long distance races of competitive canoe clubs. Inquiries regarding upcoming races can me sent to info@ohcra.com
