Fishing in Lanai
Lanai is a popular destination for fishermen not just for tourists, but for Hawaiians as well. Fishing villages on the southern shore of the island of Lanai existed for hundreds of years, flourishing on the bountiful harvest from the ocean. Shrines were erected to ply the gods and ensure a good catch. It is well known that King Kamehameha the Great himself favored the small village of Kaunolu, and it is this southern shore where many charters fish for large blue marlin. The gentle swell in Lanai creates waters that are typically calm and tranquil, ideal for sport fisherman seeking a big catch.

Peak seasons for sport fishing are spring and summer, when a good day at see will land you a picture-worthy catch of ahi yellow fin tuna, blue marlin, mahi mahi, or ono fish. Visitors eager to try their luck with the ocean should plan on a full night’s sleep and be ready to depart with a charter boat no later than 6:30am. You will be contenting not only with fellow fishermen on Lanai, but also with avid anglers departing from nearby Maui as well. Charter boats typically depart from Manele Harbor in Lanai and from Lahaina Harbor in Maui.
