Royal Hawaiian Band
Founded in 1836 by King Kamehameha III, the Royal Hawaiian Band is the only band in the United States with a royal charter and legacy, and in fact the only full-time municipal band in America.
In collaboration with King Kalakaua, Prussian leader of the band Heinrich Berger, himself an officer of the imperial German army, composed the song Hawai’I Pono’i that remains the national anthem of Hawaii. This song remains the state song of Hawaii. It is also believed that the band are the authors of the world-famous “Aloha ‘Oe”, the beautiful lilting song that reminds visitors of the “Aloha Spirit” of Hawaii, the word Aloha at once warmly welcoming and fondly saying goodbye.
This band of 40 full-time musicians performs every Friday at 12pm on the grassy lawn of the historic Iolani Palace in the Historic Buildings neighborhood of Downtown Honolulu and again on Sundays at 2pm at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand in Waikiki. Always a stirring performance, it is a pleasure to listen to this talented band in their resplendent white uniforms and is highly recommended as a distinct Honolulu experience.
