Ala Moana Beach Park
Whether you’re craving a great outdoor workout spot to practice just about any athletic sport, enjoy a leisurely picnic in the park, or just people-watch when it gets busy, the Ala Moana Beach Park is a great destination. With a little something for everyone, this large park in the heart of Honolulu is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. There are often all sorts of activities going on throughout the day, from fitness boot camps to groups of people practicing tai chi or yoga.
Enjoy running the long trails, or swimming in the warm and calm water at the beach. Although perhaps not the best beach for surfing (you may need to paddle out farther than you’re used to in order to catch a wave), this calm water is ideal for stand-up paddlers, and the lifeguards on duty will make couples with young or inexperienced swimmers feel very safe. The beach and park are very family friendly, and people of all ages can be seen enjoying the park from early morning to late evening.
Tennis courts are accessible at the McCoy Pavilion, beach volleyball nets are located on the west side of the beach, and various fitness areas are set up in the center of the park. Find an open grassy spot and have a picnic! You can either bring some food purchased at one of the many restaurants found in and around the local mall across the street, or cook your own at one of the conveniently located barbeque pits in the park.
Parking can be a little bit difficult during peak hours, which include midday and sunset, as well as weekends. Alternatively, the peak hours are a great time for people watching and getting a feel for the city of Honolulu and its people.
Extra Tips
Magic Island (part of Ala Moana Beach Park) has some truly amazing views of Waikiki Beach in the foreground and Diamond Head in the background. This is a great spot to take a picture and watch the sunset!
