Cemetery of Heroes
The Hawaiian name for the volcanic crater on which this cemetery lies is Pu’u-o-waina, which literally translated into “hill of human sacrifices”, an apt description of a place where more than 25,000 American servicemen have been laid to rest, honored for their defense of the United States in three wars within the Pacific Theatre. Soldiers having served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War are buried here in this serene location, creating a cemetery of heroes. Often referred to as Punchbowl Cemetery, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is a beautiful location reminiscent of the famous Arlingtion National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

Veteran members of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars are often on hand to provide guided tours free to the public. There is a prominent statue of Columbia, and the walls that make up this monument are carved with the names of over 28,000 Americans. In addition to the 25,000 who are buried and marked with simple stone slabs, the 28,000 American names are listed because the body of the soldier has not been recovered.

Directions
The cemetery is located at 2177 Puowaina Drive, and can be reached from Waikiki by car along a route beginning at Ala Wai Boulevard. From Ala Wai, a right turn on Kalakaua Avenue followed by a right on Beretania and a second right onto Alakea. Aleakea will give way to Queen Emma Road and will pass under the H-1, where it then turns in to Lusitana. Another right turn will bring you on to San Antonio, and a subsequent left turn on Puowaina, which leads to the cemetery. Signs posted along the way will help guide you to this somber and touching tribute to American military servicement who died protecting America and its allies.

Extra Tips
Please be respectful at all times, as this is a cemetery that is frequented by veterans and loved ones paying service to their families. A particularly moving 21-gun salute performed by howitzers honors the fallen heroes at ceremonies held in their honor.
