Named for General Rene Edward De Russy, a Union soldier who served during America’s Civil War, Fort DeRussy in Honolulu shares its name with four other forts of the same name across the United States. Once consisting of coastal defense fortifications, this beautiful area is now mostly a landscaped park expanse that is open to the public, while also home to the . While its proper name is the Fort DeRussy Armed Services Recreation Center, it is most commonly called For DeRussy Park.

This shore battery was designed to provide coastal defense for Oahu, but most of the guns were retired from active service early in 1950. Fort DeRussy is also home to Hale Koa (which means house of the warrior), a hotel reserved for active and retired members of the U.S. uniformed services. The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii is housed inside Battery Randolph, one of the decommissioned fortified coastal defenses. Originally constructed in 1911, the battery was equipped with fourteen-inch guns that protected Honolulu Harbor from attack. The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii contains several armor pieces used in World War II, many of which are displayed right outside the museum. The exhibits focus on the history of US Army warfare in the Pacific Hemisphere, which include displays and artifacts from World War II, as well as the Korean and Vietnam War.

The US Army Museum of Hawaii is free to the public, but there is paid parking outside. The gorgeous open park area is a great place for a family picnic or a quiet afternoon stroll through the well-manicured lawns that surround For DeRussy.

Fort DeRussy also extends down to the beach, providing the widest stretch of the Waikiki Beach. The water is a bit colder and often less crowded than much of the rest of the Waikiki Beach experience.
