Haleakala Volcano
Haleakala is a Hawaiian word translation into English as “house of the sun”. This dormant volcano is a massive shield volcano that forms the base of over 75% of the island of Maui. The height of the volcano reaches a peak of more than 10,00 feet, and the National Park that surrounds it extends from from the summit down all the way to the Kipahulu shoreline. This mark is truly gigantic, encompassing almost 25,000 acres and providing a view of much of the island.

The great elevation makes the summit a bit chilly, ranging in temperature from 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. The thin, dry air can cause dehydration, and hiking along the trails at this elevation is more difficult than similar paths at lower elevations. If you make your way up the side of the volcano, make certain to bring plenty of water and rest as necessary. There are no lodging facilities or food option in the park, so be sure to bring your own food. Take care to take your trash with you or to dispose of it in trashcans where they can be found at lower elevations.

Because of the lack of wind, its elevation and the lack of nearby air pollution, the summit is a sought-after location for ground-based telescopes, which conduct astrological research. Geological estimates for a long time estimated that the last eruption of Mt. Haleakala was around 1790, but recent advanced dating techniques suggest that the last eruption might have occurred up to 100 years earlier in the 17th century.

Regardless of your activity level or desire to hike around this gorgeous dormant volcano, it’s magnificent natural wonder is apparent and visible to all. Watching over Maui, the Volcano and National Park are part of the natural beauty of the island.
