Ho’okipa Beach Park
Located on the north shore of Maui off of the Road to Hana, Ho’okipa Beach is widely agreed among water sport enthusiasts to be the best windsurfing site in the world. A perfect combination of reef systems and large winter swells conspire to create the perfect storm of wind and waves that get windsurfers excited to conquer these amazing waters. Waves are less powerful during the warm summer months, but strong winds and powerful currents are still no place for beginners, no matter how enthusiastic they may be. There are no lifeguards, so it is important to be extra careful at this beach.
Ho’okipa Beach is home to the Aloha Classic Pro-Am, and until recently was home to the enigmatic Red Bull King of the Air international kitesurfing competition. During the winter waves can reach 30 feet in height, an amazing opportunity for veteran surfers. Surfing is best in the morning hours before the wind really picks up in the afternoon. Afternoon is the best time to see windsurfers, as windsurfing is not allowed on the beach until after 11am.
The beach park has picnic benches and shower facilities, restrooms and two parking lots.
