‘Iao Valley State Park
One of the most iconic landmarks on an island of almost incomparable beauty, the ‘Iao Needle is to Maui what Diamond Head is to Oahu: a rock pinnacle that commands attention and draws the eye from anywhere else towards it pinnacle. An amazing vertical rise of 2250 feet covered in velvet green tropical plants.

As lucky as many tourists already feel to be able to visit Maui and the other Hawaiian Islands, you should feel especially lucky to be able to see the ‘Iao Valley State Park. It is said that in ancient Hawaiian culture that this tropical rainforest valley was a beautiful and sacred place to be entered only by chieftains and royalty. How lucky that a simple drive can bring you to the doorstep of one of Maui’s greatest natural wonders.

There are many easy hiking trails navigating through this gorgeous tropical valley. The best viewing of the ‘Iao Needle can be observed by following the paved pathway following the streat from the parking lot. Bring insect repellant and plenty of water if you plan to spend some time in the park, as there is no drinking water available. Always remember that no matter how tempting, fresh water from pools, streams and waterfalls in the islands is never safe to drink.

Directions:
To reach this beautiful valley in central Maui, drive along Highway 32 west from Wailuku. This road becomes Highway 320 and leads directly to the foot of ‘Iao Vallety State Park.
