Kahanu Garden
One of the many gardens in the family of National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Kahanu Garden on the rugged Hana coast is more rugged and untamed than many of the more cultivated garden. Efforts at the Kahanu Garden involve the tropical plants of the Pacific islands, including not only the Hawaiian Islands but also the South Pacific islands including specimens from Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesian island chains. With one of the largest collection of breadfruit trees, Kahuna Garden is an important cornerstone in the efforts of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens.
The only tropical garden in the United States with a charter from the United States Congress, the collection of gardens overseen by National Tropical Botanical Garden began as an effort to establish a not-for-profit institution with the express purpose of promoting conservation of tropical plants on the Hawaiian Islands, education of the importance of native plants and natural environments, as well as research on tropical plants. Scientific research consists of both establishing an inventory of tropical plants species and discovering best practices to prevent extinction and promote conservation efforts.
