Kaneohe Bay
Kaneohe Bay features the largest sheltered body of water in Oahu, is the only bay on the island of Oahu with a barrier reef, and chances are very good that you’ve seen it before. The bay area includes five tiny islands, most prominent among them Mokoli’I (called “Chinaman’s Hat”) and Moku o Lo’e (called “Coconut Island”). Coconut Island was featured in the world-famous television show Gilligan’s Island, but the bay and its scenic views were also pictured in the movies Pearl Harbor and 50 First Dates.

Kaneohe has a little something for everyone, with three golf courses with stunning scenic views nearby, botanical gardens at the Byodo-In Temples, and plenty of opportunities for camping in the area. He’eia State Park is also in close proximity. The sheer size of this bay and the reef suggest the best means to tour the area is by boat or by kayak. Winds are gentle and the waves are often almost nonexistent.
Low tides recede enough for major parties to be thrown on the sandbars, supporting volleyball games, barbeques and large groups of people. If you are looking to share in the celebration of a beach party that feels like it’s being held mid-ocean, be certain to be careful and avoid leaving behind any trash when the tide rises and reclaims the sandy expanses.
The Mokapu Peninsula is home to facilities for the U.S. Marine Corps Base Hawaii, and the bay itself is a destination for marine scientists who study the area, particularly the hammerhead sharks who use the shallow waters of the bay as a breeding ground. Thousands of hammerhead sharks are born here every year, and are not particularly aggressive or dangerous. Many eager snorkelers take the opportunity to swim among them as they navigate the gentle waters in and around the reef.
