Kapalua Beach
Kapalua Beach holds the distinction and pride of being the first beach in Maui to be named “America’s Best Beach” in 1991. Were it not for the official policy of past winners to be removed from future consideration, it would surely have assumed the title again, and remain a serious contender for the title. This amazing crescent beach has a clear view of the island of Molokai across the narrow channel, and lava rock outcroppings extending far out into the ocean on either end of the beach protect the inner waters, creating a gentle lapping of small waves against the shoreline.
These calm waters make Kapalua Beach one of the very best beaches for swimming, providing a safe experience that is friendly to novice swimmers and experienced veterans alike. Snorkelers, always eager to see tropical fish and looking for yet another sea creature to cross off their mental list will enjoy exploring the right side of the beach, filled with exotic fish and strangely beautiful orange sea urchins.
Not content to allow humans to enjoy sunbathing on the white sandy beach all alone, Kapalua Beach is also a favorite destination for the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals. While it is permissible to take their pictures, it is unwise to disturb these 400-600 pound seals that can become aggressive when harassed.
