Koloiki Ridge Trail
One of the most famous hiking trails in Lanai, Koloiki Ridge is a five mile trek that will make you feel as though you have traversed the whole of the island without killing your legs. Combining some of the most scenic portions of the Monro Trail, the climax of which is one of the most scenic views the island of Lanai has to offer. Two hours at a brisk pace, and four at a leisurely pace, this trail leads to a change of 165 feet in elevation and is moderate in difficulty.

The trail starts towards the rear of the Lodge at Koele, where you might be well advised to check in with the concierge service for maps and updates on expected weather and the status of the trail. If you insist upon navigating the path yourself, simply follow the posted signs and continue uphill beyond Norfolk Pines. Take a short breather at a conveniently placed bench on the hilltop, featuring a plaque of Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem If. Cleverly placed, this hike and the serene wonder of the natural beauty of this island highlight the poem’s themes of self-reliance and the wonders of a confident spirit. With your second wind, continue around the right side of the fence and hike on towards the power lines. Continuing on along the trail will bring you through a small grove of guava trees just before reaching a dirt service road. Turning left, you’ll hop on the Munro Trial before making a right. This will bring you to Kukui Gulch, another great spot for refreshment and some photographs. Continuing along the trail will for you to bear right towards Koloiki Ridge, which is the climax of the height and provide ridge-top views of Maunalei Gulch in Lanai, and the neighboring islands of Molokai and Maui.

Extra Tips for Safety
Bring hiking shoes, as your sandals and flip-flops will prove no match for the uneven path and muddy and/or rocky stretches of this trail. A light waterproof jacket is often a good idea on any hike in Hawaii, as changes in elevation combined with constant trade winds can bring a chill, or a quick change in the weather.
