Kualoa Ranch
The word Kualoa means “long back” in the Hawaiian language, and refrs to the beautiful valleys of the ranch that are backed by steep mountain cliff. A working cattle-ranch operated by a family of real Hawaiian Paniolos (a Hawaiian word for cowboys), Kualoa was founded in 1858 and spans some 4,000 acres. The ranch includes not only dense tropical rainforests, but also wide valleys that have been repeatedly used in Hollywood movies to portray exotic lost world islands and the islands of Hawaii. Movies featuring Kualoa include 50 First Dates, Godzilla, Jurassic Park, Pearl Harbor, Tears of the Sun, and Windtalkers. A favorite landscape for television shows, Kualoa has also been used for the international television hit Lost, both Hawaii Five-O productions, and Magnum P.I.
There are a staggering number of tours available at the Kualoa Ranch, and they have something for everyone. Horseback riding tours bring experienced Hawaiian cowboys for guided trail rides. ATV adventures allow you to tear it up and get good and dirty riding the all terrain vehicles on two different tours. Movie-buffs will enjoy a tour focusing on the movies locations that have been filmed in Kualoa, while garden enthusiasts will be excited to tour the dense rainforest trail via an old Swiss transport truck. Kayaking out to the Secret Island Beach, and tours of the ocean waters are available by catamaran. There are also tours focusing on the history of Hawaii and Kualoa, as well as hula lessons for both adults and kids. There is no way to get everything done in just one day, and this is just one of the many reasons Kualoa remains a favorite destination for visitors returning to Oahu.
