La’ie Point State Wayside Park
On the far side of the town of La’ie, just south of La’ie Beach is a tiny peninsula extending out towards the ocean called Laniloa. In ancient time, legend states that this point was in fact a mo’o, a territorial and voracious dragon-like creature that would kill and devour travelers who crossed its path. The hero Kana and his brother, having just returned to Oahu from saving their mother from the island of Molokai, decided to kill the terrible creature. With his might and great skill, Kana had little difficulty in slaying the mo’o, and cut its head into five pieces and tossed them into the ocean. These pieces became the five small islands visible from La’ie Point. The islands are named Mokuauia, Pulemoku, Kukuihoolua and Mokualai. The point offers beautiful views of the ocean and the five small islands. The town of La’ie and the La’ie Point State Wayside Park are accessible by driving north from Honolulu along the Kamehameha Highway (Hwy #83).

La’ie is also home to the Polynesian Cultural Center. The Center is a 42-acre village with replicas of eight island cultures from across the vast expanse of the South Pacific. The villages represent the communities and cultures of the Fiji, Hawaiian, New Zealand, Samoan, Tahitian and Tongan islands. In addition to these island recreations, there are several learning exhibits as well as tours of the nearby Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
