Laniakea Beach
At Laniakea Beach, the most important VIPs are sea turtles. Often called “Turtle Beach”, Laniakea is your best bet for an up close and personal experience with the rare and endangered Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, called “Honu” by locals. These beautiful sea creatures flock to Laniakea because of the plentiful seaweed (called “limu”) which the animals feed on, and because this particular beach and reef area are largely safe from tiger sharks and some of the other natural predators of these sea turtles. Local volunteers often help instruct visitors and prevent them from getting too close. Signs are posted warning visitors, and red ropes are often used to ensure the very important guests are not bothered by too many requests for photographs. Nevertheless, those sea turtles who do decide to soak up some rays on the sandy beach are happy to pose for pictures, and even with volunteers on hand it is easy to get a great picture from one or two arm lengths away. Many of the locals are familiar with the turtles who are returning celebrities, and are happy to talk to individuals and groups interested in learning more about these creatures.

Without a real formal parking lot area, Laniakea Beach can appear to be a little bit hard to find. The easiest way is to drive from Haleiwa Town towards Waimea. Roughly two miles from town you will see a huge group of cars parked along the road. Although this beach is also popular with surfers, the majority of the visitors are here to see the sea turtles. There are no bathrooms or other facilities at Laniakea Beach, and no real options for food within walking distance. After seeing the turtles here, you will be ready to meet up with them in their own element out on the water in other beaches, knowing you have already secured some great pictures.

Extra Tips
Listed as a threatened species, the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are protected by U.S. and Hawaiian State law. For the safety of these gentle reptiles , please refrain from chasing, crowding, feeding, or otherwise bother the animals.
