Limahuli Garden and Preserve
Nestled in a lush tropical valley on the northern shore of Kauai, the Limahuli Garden and Preserve is one of several gardens that form the National Tropical Botanical Gardens. Situated between the Pacific and Makana Mountain, Limahuli means “turning hands” in the Hawaiian language, referencing the native Hawaiians who built agricultural terraces out of lava rock on lower slopes of Mt. Makana, cultivating taro, a staple crop and a cornerstone of the diet of native Hawaiians from ancient times to the present day.

The plant collection includes numerous tropical plant species native to northwestern Kauai. Rare varieties of agricultural crop plants are also cultivated as part of ethno-botanical and sustainable farming research projects. This collection includes bananas, sugar cane, sweet potatoes, and other plants cultivated not only for food consumption but also for textile production and their medicinal value.

One of the main focuses of the Limahuli Garden is the mandate of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens to research effective conservation and restoration techniques to ensure the survival of tropical plant species native to the Hawaiian Islands. Emphasizing environmental conservation and sustainable management practices, the visitor center building of the Limahuli Garden is energy independent, powered by a photovoltaic system of solar panels. Built in 1995 at the entrance of the gardens, the visitor center is a check-in point for the garden tours and also has a small gift shop.

Limahuli Garden and Preserve: 808.826.1053. Both guided and self-guided tours are available. Guided tickets for adults cost $30, and self-guided tours are $15. Children aged 10-12 cost $15 on guided tours, but are free on self-guided tours. It is requested that children under the age of 10 be excluded from guided tours.

Directions: From Hanalei, continue on Highway 560 past Ha’ena Beach and turn left at the clearly marked entrance to the Limahuli Garden and Preserve.
