Lydgate Beach Park
Located near the mouth of Kauai’s Wailua River on the eastern coast of the island, this beach park was named for Rev. John Lydgate, a local resident who served as a civic leader and church pastor of the Lihue Union Church and Koloa Church. Lydgate Beach Park has something for everyone and is extremely family-friendly. This white sandy beach is a true Kauai treasure.

The calm waters are great for swimming and snorkeling, and looked over by lifefguards who watch not only the beach shoreline, but also two large pools separated from the beach by an artificial rock barrier on the northern end of the beach. The inner pool has shallow water perfect for young, inexperienced swimmers while the outer pool is a little deeper and offers better opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. Protected from the waves that lap at the shoreline, the pools are a great way to introduce children to swimming and snorkeling. Feeding the fish is allowed, and will draw large schools of fish that can then be easily identified by the helpful signs posted at the pools to help identify the reef fish.

In addition to the beach, the park area offers the potential for visitors to engage in a wide variety of activities. A large playground is fun for kids, while a large grassy area is great for picnics and flying kites. This grass area is circled by a pedestrian and bike path. There are plenty of trees planted to provide shade for folks eager to get out of the sun. Facilities include restrooms, showers and the aforementioned lifeguard tower.

Directions:
To reach Lydgate Beach Park, take Highway 56 towards Wailua. Take a right turn on to Leho Drive at mile marker #5 and then the second right will lead you right to the beach parking lot.
