Pi’ilanihale Heiau
A heiau is a shrine or place of worship, and you will see many small heiaus around the island, many dedicated to gods or spirits promoting good harvests and fishing. Pi’ilanihale Heiau is the largest ancient place of worship that is still intact. This shrine is so large it is often thought of as a temple, and was constructed from lava rock in the 14th century. The stone platform was recently discovered in the 1970s when the removal of tropical plants covering the site were removed, revealing a massive structure the size of two football fields.

To reach the Pi’ilanihale Heiau, take the Hana Highway (#360) east towards the town of Hana, and proceed to the Kahanu Gardens, one of the several gardens in the National Tropical Botanical Garden family. A self-guided tour will lead you to the edge of the forest, and the location of the massive heiau. Visitors are forbidden from climbing or approaching the archaeological wonder, but its massive size can be admired from afar. You can take pictures of the heiau, and wander the gardens to see the beautiful coastal views and rare tropical plants native to the islands of the South Pacific.
