Sunset Beach
During the warm, calm summer months, Sunset Beach is a great family destination for anyone looking to enjoy a beautiful stretch of one of Hawaii largest beaches. From 200 to 300 wide in many places, and stretching over two miles in length, Sunset Beach accommodates large numbers of visitors without ever feeling as crowded as Waikiki. A sharp drop of the ocean bottom just offshore and a rip tide mean that swimming be attempted only by veteran ocean swimmers. The rip tide is famous, called the Sunset Rip, and is not to be underestimated. However, this same drop of the ocean floor makes a relatively friendly area for snorkelers looking to see some curious tropical fish out around the reefs.

Sunset Beach maintains standard beach amenities, including lifeguard stations, restrooms and showers, as well as picnic tables. Bring your sunscreen though, the picnic tables and grassy areas are short on shade, meaning that unless you’ve brought plenty of zinc oxide you may need to bring along some beach umbrellas. Parking is free but often crowded. You may be better served parking on Ke Nui Road above the beach and then making your way down to the beach on foot.

Winter brings an immense change to the surf at Sunset Beach, and relatively calm waters give way to waves that can measure anywhere from fifteen to thirty feet in height. This has made Sunset Beach a favorite among surfers during the winter months, and one of three homes of the world famous Triple Crown Surfing Contest since 1983, along with Waimea Bay and the Ehukai Beach. Ehukai Beach is home to the Banzai Pipeline. If you’re looking to catch a glimpse of the professionals strut their stuff across some amazing waves, bring binoculars: the waves here break farther offshore.
