Waikiki Aquarium
The Waikiki Aquarium is a marine science institution open to the public. While there are numerous beaches around Oahu where you can see marine sea life and a multitude of tours and charter expeditions that coordinate tours of the ocean and facilitate undersea expeditions with scuba and snorkel gear, few of these opportunities are within walking distance of your hotel in Waikiki, and almost none of them will allow to see such a huge diversity of aquatic marine life. The Waikiki Aquarium is home to almost 500 species of marine plants and animals. Indoor exhibits include large, beautiful tanks that provide homes to reef sharks, an exhibit celebrating aquatic animals that utilize jet propulsion, including nautilus, octopi and squid, and many others. Jellyfish, shallow and deep coral reef exhibits and more are all on display for your education and entertainment.

Established in 1904 by the Honolulu Rapid Transit Authority, the aquarium was originally a ploy to entice riders to see take a trolley all the way to the end of the line at Queen Kapi’olani Park. One of the oldest aquariums in the United States, the Waikiki Aquarium has grown considerably since its opening, featuring open-air exhibits including tide pools, coral farms, and the Hawaiian Monk Seal Habitat.

The Waikiki Aquarium is open daily from 9am-4:30pm, and is only closed on Honolulu Marathon Day (December 11) and Christmas Day. Admission to the aquarium is $9 for adults, $4 for youth ages 13-17, and $2 for children 5-12. Locals, military servicemen, students, and seniors can enter the aquarium at a reduced price of $6. The aquarium is located alongside is Kalakaua Ave., but is within walking distance of most Waikiki hotels.
