Wailua Valley
Home to the Wailua River, the only navigable river in Kauai, Wailua Valley is a tropical dream, enabling a wide variety of day trips and tours upriver to exotic destinations including the lava cave and natural amphitheater called Fern Grotto, the twin waterfall cascades of the Opaekaa Falls, and historic shrines (called “heiaus” in Hawaiian) abound in including the Hikinaakala Heiau, Kalaeokamanu Haeiu, Malea and Polihau Heiaus.

The beauty of the Wailua Valley has drawn attention from Hollywood on multiple occasions, and the Wailua River has been shot as a scenery backdrop for films such as Blue Hawaii and Islands in the Stream. Opaekaa Falls was featured in Blue Hawaii and The Wackiest Ship in the Army. Wailua Falls was featured in the opening sequence of the television sensation Fantasy Island. Visitors may enjoy tracking down and identifying the exact locations from these favorite films of the silver screen.

The Wailua River can be toured by riding on an old-fashioned flat riverboat, or by kayak. The Wailua River mouth leads to Pacific Ocean by the Lydgate Beach Park. There is no shortage of amazing adventures to be had and sights to behold in Wailua Valley State Park.
