Kapiolani Park
I checked into a great room at my Aqua hotel and checked out their stylish new beach towels. Introduced early this year, the towel is plush, bold and a definite winner on the Waikiki beach scene. It’s all part of a new “beach boutique” concept being rolled out by Aqua that will next feature sand chairs. Today I’m taking my custom designed towel on a test spin with camera.

The Aqua Towel at the Honolulu Zoo
This is a fun place to enjoy a picnic with family. Coolers and outside food are welcome on Zoo grounds. Or you can purchase snacks from popular vendors inside. The expansive lawns offer plenty of room to spread out. The kids enjoyed climbing on a play giraffe and covering it with their Aqua towel.
After lunch we explored the Zoo’s 42 acres and tried to see all of the 1,200 animals. There’s an emphasis here on Pacific Tropical ecosystems. I also liked the African Savannah. A separate keiki zoo offered a fish tank for young and old to enjoy. I took the plunge and crawled into its center then stood in the middle watching the fish swim by. Very cool.
During the summer there are special programs here on Wednesday evenings. They feature musical entertainment and the $3 admission is a deal.
• President Obama and his family visited the Zoo the last time they came to Hawaii.
• The Zoo is located at the corner of Kapahulu Avenue and Kalakaua Avenue.
• Free parking can be found at the Waikiki Shell or on Kapahulu. $1 hourly metered parking is available at the Zoo.
• Admission is $12 for 13 and over, and $3 ages 4-12.
• The Zoo is open daily from 9am to 4pm

Sans Souci Beach
Both ends of the Waikiki strip have top notch beaches to enjoy. Sans Souci is closest to the Zoo and Aloha Moana Beach Park is at the opposite end of town.
Sans Souci offers great swimming and sunning and is popular with locals. Expect to see picnics and barbecues on weekends. There’s a marker off shore you can swim to if you’re experienced. It features a mostly sandy bottom with few rocks.
Ala Moana Beach Park is huge at 100 acres. I decided to place my Aqua towel here. There’s plenty of free parking (except on popular weekends) at this local favorite.

Ala Moana Beach Park
Located directly across from the shopping center of the same name, here’s another spot that’s fantastic for picnics, barbecues and just plain fun. There’s a reef that protects the beach, so the water is calm and attracts many swimmers and families. I also liked the new water lane that separated the stand-up surfers.
This broad gold-sand beach is over a half-mile long. It was man-made in the 1950’s when excess sand was dumped here. There are lots of tree shaded grassy areas behind the beach, so you can take your pick of sun or shade. After a swim, make sure you walk around Magic Island for beautiful views of Waikiki.
This is also a great place to watch fireworks on Friday nights or see wedding photos being taken every day of the week.
• Ala Moana is busy on weekends, so come on weekdays or expect to have a lot of good natured company.
• Amenities include lifeguards, showers, restrooms, phones, tennis courts, picnic tables, food concessions and a music pavilion.

Yoga in Waikiki
My two beaches didn’t make it on the Dr. Beach best of 2011 list. Another Waikiki beach was ranked third in the USA. It’s Kahanamoku which is located between the Ala Wai small boat harbor and catamaran pier. Another popular choice for families and children.
As it turns out, my Aqua hotel lanai has a distant view of Kahanamoku beach. It inspires me to strike my best tree posture at the end of my day.
Where will you take your Aqua beach towel?
I gave you three of my best ideas. Now I want to hear from you. Share with me your favorite Aqua beach towel day on your Hawaii vacation.
