Kalaupapa Trail Serene Kalaupapa National Historic Park, accessible only by mule ride, hiking tour or small commuter airplane, is well worth the visit. A 2.9-mile trail etched into sheer cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean features 26 switchbacks and 90 minutes of magnificent views, ending in one of the most remote settlements in Hawaii. This special community was once home to Hansen’s disease patients who were exiled to this isolated peninsula.
Halawa Waterfall
Halawa Valley Witness the Hawaii of a past era when you hike through this lush valley, which is believed to have seen the first Polynesian settlers as early as 650 AD. Enjoy gorgeous views, cascading waterfalls, and the numerous sites that make this is one of the island's most historic areas. The roundtrip hike follows moderate terrain and takes about five hours.
